Worawa Aboriginal College

Boys recount excerpts

We really enjoyed the talk from tour guide Lisa, I enjoyed it because she explained everything thoroughly to everyone and had some pretty cool stories and sightings. Ilhan Daic 7B

After an educational presentation, we went for a walk on the Dreaming Trail and learnt about the plants, survival tactics and more about the Aboriginal beliefs. Abdul-Rahman 7B

When we got there we met a woman whose name was Lisa and she was from the aboriginal tribe Nyunga. First, she told us about all the different stuff in the room then she told us an extremely touching story about the stolen generation and how one of them was related to her. Bilal Niazi 7B

Most of the fun was having lunch with the girls at the college and playing basketball with them. They were really good. Next time I play with them I should get lots of practice. Mohammad Ghafari 7B

We learned a lot. Mostly everyone felt sorry for the Aboriginals but we were also overjoyed and inspired by the amount of faith in the Aborigines. We also learnt about a few aboriginal stories. Ali Abbas 7B

Girls recounts excerpts

We went to visit the girls at Worawa College, who were very caring and lovely. They were also very sporty. Lisa, the Gallery Manager and teacher told such interesting stories and we learned a lot about Aboriginal people and their culture. Zainab Nezami

Lisa spoke about one of her students and how they had been sitting together by a lake. They were discussing her spirit animal. As time went by, a black swan and a white swan flew down and landed on the water. The girl’s spirit animals had visited her at one of the most difficult times in her life – on the death of her mother, a long way from Healesville. Madina Aman

We met the Aboriginal girls who were nice and kind. We made a lot of new friends and learned many new things. Maha Aboucham

The girls at Worawa College are so strong and fast. They are also so good at basketball. I learned a lot of new things. Traditions. Nice things. Lyna Vo

Lisa was an amazing tour guide. She was so professional. She knew everything about her history and about the college – before, after and during the construction of the college. She was also very detailed in her facts. Aminah El-Omari

The highlight of my day was when I played basketball with the indigenous kids. It was funny when the Sirius College boys and girls were about how well they were playing and how kind they were. Bahara Ebrahimi

Yesterday we went to Worawa College in Healesville. It’s a boarding school for girls from all over Australia in Years 7 to 10. The principal was one of the Sapphires and Ms Lisa was the daughter of one of the girls that walked along the Rabbit Proof Fence. Safa Matloub

I liked how we played basketball with them. I liked it, and it was very emotional. I liked how they welcomed us. I liked how they let us play. Nigina Qalandari

My highlight was getting to play basketball against them. To my surprise, they were really fast and good at basketball. Diya Babu

The highlight of the excursion was definitely having lunch with the Aboriginal girls. It was lovely meeting the girls. I really enjoyed playing basketball with them; although, they were unbeatable! Aliya Neama

Their normal throw is like our best shot at throwing that no one can ever get! Zumra Safak

On Tuesday, we went to Worawa College. It’s a school for indigenous girls. We learnt about the spirit makers and tribes. We had lunch there and played basketball with the girls. Tabarac Albadri

Indigenous Australians recognise seven seasons, not four. When a child is of six month’s gestation, he or she receives their animal totem, which depends on which season they were in their mother’s womb. Mahnoor Baig

On Tuesday, 7th of March, we went to Worawa College. We learned about a lot of things, like: dreamtime stories, aboriginal history and animal totems. The girls were very kind and very good at sports! Esma Kaya

We went on a Dreamtime Walk. Eimann Fareed

The girls were fantastic at basketball. Personally, I think they should have their own professional team! Fathima Hashim

I really enjoyed the session with Lisa Hodgson and how she talked about her family history. Sitra Feki

When we got to our destination, we were made to think about aboriginal culture; we also had a walk in the dreamtime. Fatima Yasin

We got to listen to all the fascinating stories about Aboriginal history and culture. After that, we went out for lunch and Mr A went out on to the court to ask the girls from Worawa if we could play basketball with them. Amina Zeitoune

The excursion to Worawa College was fun. We got to meet Aboriginal girls, learn about aboriginal culture and we saw many examples of indigenous art. We saw and walked on the Dreamtime Trail, which told us lots of different stories. I hope to visit again one day. Zainab Kusdian

Visiting Worawa College was really cool, and I’d never been to a boarding school before. Something that was interesting was meeting Aboriginal girls who are my age. Watching them play basketball was amazing! They were so fast, sometimes I couldn’t even see the ball. The sad part of the day was talking about the Stolen Generation. I really loved the excursion, and would love to do something like that again. Samah Newaz

It was sad when I heard that they were taken away from their homes and brought to a mission. They had to figure everything out by themselves. Nigishah Ali

It was a remarkable experience that I will cherish forever. Donya Wahidi

The drive to Worawa College was very long, but it was worth it! The college views were amazing. We learned so much, and everyone was so nice. There was a brilliant gallery and it was fun to learn about the diversity of Aboriginal culture. Elvedina Brkic

Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object, system or measurable human interaction. Students were asked to design something simple like their front cover, they incorporated elements that where meaningful in their life. They looked at their personal interest, as well as elements that made up their personality. Students were also asked to re-design a celebrity portrait through observational drawing.

Year 7/8 Research Science

Students are certainly enjoying Research Science where they get a hands on experience by conducting experiments. They collected water samples and tested the quality of water. Later on they were just amazed when they saw the huge variety of organisms living in pond water, when they checked this water under the microscope. Presently they are testing the effects of different fertilisers on the growth of plants by growing veggies in four veggie beds. Besides this, they did lots of fun experiments and are in the process of creating videos of them doing experiments.
